If you want to mate If want to have sex, you better be resourceful

A group of penguins in the Falkland IslandsWe all knew sex was a natural act. But these researchers at the University of Michigan have gone a step further and shown that the reproductive act is, in fact, a trade-off between the male and female of the species.

Who would have thought that humans and penguins had something in common, other than the fact that some men and women tend to be bird-brained?

But sample this. Studies have shown that female penguins mate with males who bring them pebbles to build nests. More generally among species, including human beings, the male of the species offers protection and resources to the female and offspring in exchange for reproductive rights from the female.

Moreover, recent studies have shown that such behaviours are built-in and are independent of how wealthy or 'resourceful' either party might be.

So stock up if you're thinking of taking the long road to marital bliss.
