Phone Sex -- The Book
In this modern landscape of Craigslist hookers and free Internet porn, phone sex seems like a tame throwback to yesteryear. Consider it the masturbation equivalent of Fred Flintstone's foot-powered car. But a new book gives visual proof that somebody out there is still dialing 1-900.
Phone Sex , by photographer Phil Toledano, offers portraits of the men and women who are usually heard but not seen by callers looking for a little aural stimulation. Toledano, who previously photographed the orgasmic faces of video game players, photographed and interviewed 26 phone sex operators about their quirky occupations.
"It is a contract of self-delusion," says Toledano. "The caller agrees to pretend that he (or she) is calling a young, beautiful girl, and the phonesex operator willingly plays the part."
An operator puts it even more simply. "It's not sex. It's a cocktail of testosterone, fueled by addiction to pornography, loneliness, and the need to hear a woman's voice."
We'll take our loneliness-and-pornography-addiction cocktail with a twist of lime, please.
